Response to "Safeguarding in Cameroon’s Seminaries Is a Vital First Step—but Accountability Must Extend to Priests, Bishops, and Civil Authorities"

By a Cleric of the Bamenda Archdiocese,

Prof. Januarius Jingwa (Asongu) is speaking from within the local Church. This raises a critical question: What is the purpose of forming and training young men in the seminary when such evident counter-witnessing persists within our local Church?

Many of our bishops and priests hold doctoral degrees in various fields of psychology, yet there is no structured, practical program dedicated to human development and the promotion of a truly integrated and virtuous quality of life. Instead, the prevailing concerns appear to revolve around money, sexual misconduct, and material acquisition within the Church.

Furthermore, consider the ongoing high level of insecurity in our province, marked by open banditry that has persisted for the past nine years. This grave issue has never been meaningfully addressed or discussed in our seminaries. Indeed, we—the clergy and the faithful—have endured profound trauma inflicted by both the Church and the state.

This situation demands serious reflection and urgent reform.

Sincerely, [A Cleric of the Bamenda Archdiocese]
