Cameroun Colonial Takeover and Control of Ambazonia: Deconstructing Myths of Territorial Acquisition
BUEA, CAMEROON | FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE | TOWNSEND, DELAWARE — June 2026 — Saint Monica University Press (SMU Press) is pleased to announce the publication of Cameroun Colonial Takeover and Control of Ambazonia: Deconstructing Myths of Territorial Acquisition, a groundbreaking new work by internationally respected legal scholar, human rights advocate, and Professor Emeritus of Law, Carlson Anyangwe. Widely recognized as one of the foremost authorities on the Ambazonia question, Professor Anyangwe offers a comprehensive legal and historical examination of one of Africa's longest-running and most consequential political struggles.
Drawing upon decades of scholarship in international law, decolonization, human rights, and state sovereignty, the book chronicles more than sixty years of interaction between Ambazonia (formerly the British Southern Cameroons) and Cameroun. It explores the historical origins of the dispute, competing claims of sovereignty, the legal status of Ambazonia, and the broader implications of the conflict for international law and African political development.
Through detailed legal analysis and historical documentation, Anyangwe challenges prevailing assumptions about the relationship between Ambazonia and Cameroun while providing readers with a carefully argued interpretation of the political and legal foundations of the Ambazonia struggle. The work contributes significantly to ongoing scholarly and policy debates concerning self-determination, decolonization, federalism, territorial integrity, and international justice.
Professor Anyangwe holds advanced law degrees from the University of London and has served in numerous academic leadership positions throughout Africa. A former member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights Working Group of Experts on the Death Penalty, Extrajudicial and Summary Executions in Africa, he has authored more than one hundred scholarly publications and is internationally recognized for his contributions to legal scholarship and human rights advocacy.
According to SMU Press, the publication represents an important contribution to contemporary scholarship on Africa, decolonization, and international law.
"Carlson Anyangwe has been one of the most influential intellectual voices documenting and analyzing the historical and legal dimensions of the Ambazonia question. This book brings together decades of scholarship into a concise yet powerful volume that will inform scholars, policymakers, journalists, students, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the conflict and its broader implications."
