Waiting for a Response from the Bishops: Fr. John Brummelhuis and Missionary Witness

By Januarius Asongu, PhD

In my recent article on Fr. John Brummelhuis, MHM, I examine the extraordinary missionary life of a Dutch priest whose service in Cameroon embodied evangelical charity, physical labor for the poor, and profound spiritual humility. The study argues that his life reflects heroic virtue and a lasting fama sanctitatis—a reputation for holiness among the people he served.

Fr. Brummelhuis is remembered in Lebialem as “Fr. John the Road,” a title given by local communities in recognition of the roads he helped build to connect isolated villages and make sacramental life and development possible. His life combined missionary service, unjust suffering, deep prayer, and eventual contemplative withdrawal into monastic life.

Because of this enduring witness, I have formally communicated to the bishops of the Bamenda ecclesiastical province the need to begin ecclesial discernment toward a possible cause for canonization. Such discernment belongs entirely to the Church. At present, however, I have not yet received a response.

The hope remains that the Church will examine this remarkable missionary life with the seriousness it deserves.
